Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Software Defect Manager to lead and manage the defect tracking, resolution, and quality assurance processes for our software development lifecycle. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in defect management, testing, and team leadership, with a strong focus on ensuring that software products meet the highest quality standards. As the Software Defect Manager, you will work closely with developers, QA teams, product managers, and other stakeholders to identify, manage, and resolve defects in a timely manner across multiple release trains, ensuring a smooth and efficient release cycle.

Contributions

Key Responsibilities:

  • Defect Lifecycle Management: Oversee the entire defect lifecycle, including identification, tracking, prioritization, and resolution, ensuring all defects are addressed effectively.
  • Defect Reporting and Documentation: Maintain and manage defect databases using tools like Jira, ensuring proper documentation and clear reporting of defects.
  • Collaboration and Coordination: Work closely with development, QA, and product teams to ensure defects are prioritized based on severity and impact to the business. Act as a liaison between stakeholders to facilitate defect resolution.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Lead root cause analysis for critical or recurring defects to identify underlying issues and implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Quality Assurance Process Improvement: Continuously evaluate and improve defect management processes, defect tracking systems, and QA practices to enhance efficiency and software quality.
  • Reporting and Metrics: Provide regular reports on defect status, trends, and metrics to senior management, identifying key areas of improvement and ensuring transparent communication on defect resolution progress.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Participate in Agile or Scrum meetings, such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives, to ensure timely defect resolution within the sprint cycles.
  • Defect Prevention: Work proactively to identify opportunities for defect prevention, including test case improvements, enhanced automation, and better development practices.

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in software quality assurance, testing, or defect management.
  • 2+ years of experience in a leadership or managerial role overseeing defect management processes.
  • Strong knowledge of defect tracking systems (e.g., Jira, Bugzilla, TFS, Quality Center).
  • Proficiency in test management tools and automated testing frameworks (e.g., Selenium, TestNG, JUnit).
  • Experience with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe).
  • Familiarity with root cause analysis and corrective action processes.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide a team toward common goals.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized, with a strong commitment to quality.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment and handle competing priorities.
  • Proactive in identifying issues and implementing solutions to drive continuous improvement.

Preferred:

  • Certification in ISTQB (International Software Testing Qualifications Board) or equivalent.
  • Experience with automated testing tools such as Selenium, QTP, or LoadRunner.
  • Familiarity with version control systems like Git.
  • Agile certifications such as Certified Scrum Master (CSM) or SAFe certification.

Steampunk relies on several factors to determine salary, including but not limited to geographic location, contractual requirements, education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience. The projected compensation range for this position is $110,000 to $175,000.  The estimate displayed represents a typical annual salary range for this position.
